Sedation Dentistry
Sedation Relaxes Anxious Patients
Sedation dentistry is a great option for children who get terrified visiting the dentist. If your child is frightened or highly averse to visiting the dentist, sedation will help alleviate their anxiety. It can be difficult to get children who are not used to seeing a dentist to have their teeth checked for care and maintenance. When that happens, bring them in to see our sedation dentists who have completed training specifically for pediatric patients.
How Is Nitrous Oxide Administered?
In nitrous oxide dentistry, a patient is given a mask that covers their nose, and the gas will be dispensed through the mask. After a few seconds or a few minutes, the patient begins to feel the effects of the gas. This gas, otherwise called laughing gas, gives a feeling of euphoria and relaxation.
It also makes procedures less painful, although in many cases, an injection is also given after the gas takes effect — just to make sure the patient doesn’t feel any pain. When the procedure is over, the flow of nitrous oxide is decreased to zero, and we later increase the oxygen. After resting in the seat for a couple of minutes, the child will feel completely normal again. Nitrous oxide dentistry is a standard of the industry, and it is known to be quite safe.
